Lucy Mercer Ambassadors of bloomtrigger

* Where do you live?
Peckham, London

* Occupation?
Magazine editor, writer, bartender!

Favourite rainforest animal?
Pangolin! – Click here to find out what this animal is!

* What inspires you?
People who work across disciplines to change the world for the better, especially those with a focus on environmental issues. I think it is easier to be specialist rather than make subjects accessible to others. Some of the people I admire are James Hansen, a climate scientist who has written some really influential books on climate change, and Carter Bales, an investment banker-turned-environmental expert who gave some fabulous speeches to The Nature Conservancy and the UN in 2008.

* What makes you angry?
When well-educated people are apathetic about the environment.

* What is your personal mission?
I would like to be part of a new cross-cultural environmental movement in which scientists and artists collaborate as a means of alerting people to the terrible environmental problems that we face.

* If you were Prime Minister, what would be the first thing you’d change?
I would reverse the trend in privatisation in the UK – education, business, health, housing – you name it. I don’t think that we can take collective responsibility for the environment without being a collective, or with these unfair distributions of power. (That’s probably more than one thing isn’t it!)

* Why did you agree to become a bloomtrigger Ambassador?
I am really passionate about forest protection and think that the bloomtrigger project offers a really pragmatic, accessible and creative solution to the deforestation problem. Furthermore, it is scalable – it has lots of potential.

* Can you describe a typical workday?
Unfortunately I don’t have a regular schedule! At the start of the week I work double shifts for a couple of days in a pub so I can pay my rent. Then I spend the rest of the week catching up on news, reading science papers and doing editing work for two magazines. And writing poetry and going to art shows in the evening.

* How do you define success?
To be able to focus on your goals without being sidetracked (money, success, doubt).

* What’s the best advice anyone’s ever given you?
Having lots of money makes people miserable and results in an unhealthy relationship to the world.

* What’s your favourite book or film of late?
I just read a great poetry criticism book by John Elder called ‘Imagining the Earth’. It’s so helpful in examining the different ways that artists have represented the environment.

* What would you most like to happen to protect the planet?
The formation of an environmental task squad or ‘earth guard’, which would be a bit like the U.N. – it would be able to override countries on their legislation if it was damaging to the earth as whole and would fine those who transgressed!

* Do you have a favourite quote you can share with us?
Sophocles said that in controlling nature, we have become “clever beyond all dreams”
